We're here most weeks to explore recent news related to smart buildings, energy management, operational technology and network security in an effort to understand where the industry is now and to encourage big thinking in bite-sized chunks.
STACK expands in Hillsboro
STACK INFRASTRUCTURE, a digital infrastructure partner to the world’s most innovative companies, is expanding its footprint in the Portland, Oregon area with a third datacenter in Hillsboro which broke ground last week. The 28-acre campus will include “an initial 24MW building ready Q3 of 2021 and immediately adjacent growth potential, offering a total campus capacity of 84 MW to handle the largest workloads and accommodate its clients’ future expansion plans.” OTI works extensively with STACK, including on neighboring Hillsboro datacenters.
Another cloud company enters IoT market
It's no secret that automation is the key to smart buildings of the future. The benefits of advanced building automation systems include decentralized management over IP networks; scalable architectures; fail-safe network topologies; multi-layered security protocols; as ease of management through integration. One perhaps underappreciated aspect of building automation is lighting. Here, a deep dive on the benefits of networked lighting controls.
Thermal imaging cameras for HVAC techs
For service contractors, you may want to consider adding a thermal imaging camera to your toolbelt. They're being deployed in the field to help facility engineers and maintenance teams check airflow within vents without having to remove ceiling tiles or climb in the ceiling. It may not fix the problem, but it may give you a more pin-pointed area to start your work. Combine that with a good building analytics system and you're on your way to optimized service contracts.
